Coordinated Use of miniaturized Robotic equipment and advanced Sensors for search and rescue OpeRations
After an earthquake, landslide or flood, search, and rescue teams scramble to help trapped survivors. Finding victims can be a tough job, even with the use of sniffer dogs, highly sensitive audio listening devices, and thermal imaging cameras.
The EU-funded CURSOR project developed mini robotic equipment and advanced sensors to assist in these operations. Specifically, the system comprises of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), 3D modelling, and transportation of disposable miniaturised robots that are equipped with advanced sensors for the detection of volatile chemical signatures emanating from human beings. Information and data collected are transferred in real time to a handheld device operated by first responders at the disaster site.

Impact
The CURSOR SaR Kit and its single components and platforms have a significant impact on the efficiency of First Responder’s (FR) operations, in particular during the first highly important Golden Hours. Therefore, CURSOR boosts the effectiveness of the International USaR Teams and so the Security Union (SU).
The easy, mobile and fast deployable CURSOR SaR Kit provides enhanced mobile sensing capabilities and integration and visualisation of data coming from improved sensors and dispersion models which contributes to a quicker establishment of a sufficient common situational awareness picture, required for educated decision making and any further steps taken in the SaR mission. The earlier availability and higher accuracy of the disaster area 3D mapping and the estimated location voids allows faster, safer and more accurate deployment of SaR teams on-site, together with higher level of command and control capabilities in the work area/ headquarters
